Short version: Search Memo stores all your browsing data exclusively on your own device. We never collect, transmit, or sell your personal data. The only outbound network calls are ones you explicitly trigger by using the AI search feature with your own API key.

1. Overview

Search Memo ("the Extension") is a local Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) tool for Google Chrome. It automatically saves a personal memory of pages you visit — including the URL, page title, time spent reading, and the main readable text — so you can search and recall your browsing history using natural language via an AI API of your choice (e.g., Google Gemini or DeepSeek).

2. Data We Collect and How We Use It

All data listed below is collected solely to provide the Extension's features and is stored only on your local device.

3. Where Your Data Is Stored

All collected data is saved to your browser's local storage (Chrome Storage API with unlimitedStorage) on your own device. No data is synced to Chrome account sync, uploaded to our servers, or stored in any cloud service operated by us.

4. Data Shared With Third Parties

We do not sell, rent, or share your data with any third party. The one exception is user-initiated AI search:

5. Permissions Justification

Permission Why It Is Needed
tabs Read the URL and title of the active tab to record page visits.
history Access Chrome's browsing history to supplement the local memory index.
bookmarks Read bookmarks to make them searchable alongside browsing history.
idle Detect when the user is idle to accurately measure active reading time.
alarms Schedule periodic background tasks (e.g., index cleanup).
storage / unlimitedStorage Persist the local memory index on the user's device without size limits.
downloads Allow users to export their local memory as a file.
windows Track window focus to support multi-window reading-time tracking.
sidePanel Display the AI chat interface in Chrome's side panel.
<all_urls> (host permission) Inject the content script on any page the user visits so readable text can be extracted locally.

6. Data Retention and Deletion

Your local memory accumulates as you browse. You can clear all stored data at any time through the Extension's options page. Uninstalling the Extension from Chrome will remove all locally stored data associated with it.

7. Children's Privacy

Search Memo is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect any information from children.

8. Changes to This Policy

If we make material changes to this privacy policy, we will update the "Last updated" date above and, where appropriate, notify users via the Chrome Web Store listing or extension update notes.
